Working with files

Opening and saving files

WinOrganizer lets you create as many .gso files (database files) as you like. To create a new file, select the File|New menu item.

To save a file, select the File|Save menu item. To save a file under some other (new) name , select the File|Save as... menu item.

To open an existing file, select the File|Open menu item. After the file is opened, a new tab page indicating the name of a newly opened file will appear in the bottom part of the program's main window.

To close the current file, use the File|Close menu item or click the icon in the toolbar.


Use this command to reopen the current file from the disk once again, or select a file to reopen in the dropdown list. To do this, select File|Open|Reload Current File.

Create a Backup Copy...

Allows you to backup the current file. To do this, select File|Create a Backup Copy....
A dialog box appears on the screen allowing you to save a file. By default, the program adds a suffix with the current date to the name of a saved file. For example, to backup a file named database.gso, the program will use database_2005.03.30.gso, where 2005.03.30 is a backup date. After the backup copy is created, you can record this file to external media (CD, DVD, USB drive, etc.) or other safe location. To avoid losing data as a result of accidental deletion or computer failure, we recommend creating backup copies of your files on a regular basis.

Compressing files

To compress the current file, select the File|Compress menu item.
An unused space inside the .gso file that appears during the program session will be packed/compressed. That is, there is a certain optimization of the database file. A compressed file takes less space on your hard drive. This kind of compressing has nothing to do with packing using zip-like archivers.
Note that WinOrganizer always creates a backup copy of the compressed file (only if the corresponding option is enabled). WinOrganizer files have the .gso extension. A backup copy has the same filename, but different extension - bak. Thus, if an error occurs during file compressing (for example, no space on your hard disk, etc.) or the program is unable to open a file, there is always a chance to rename the backup bak file into a gso file to use it in the program. If WinOrganizer cannot create a backup copy (for example, the absence of free space on your drive), it will notify you of this fault so that you will be able to cancel file compressing.
